The Mandalorian Season 3 To Start Filming This Year

The Mandalorian season 3 will most likely start filming before the end of 2020, says showrunner Jon Favreau. After wowing Star Wars fans last year with its interesting world-building, solid storytelling and compelling character development, The Mandalorian is set to return this month for a second season on Disney+.

Season 1 of the hit show of course climaxed with the arrival of a new villain in Moff Gideon, who was revealed to be the owner of the mysterious darksaber, a weapon introduced in the extended Star Wars universe. Fans already know that Gideon and his weapon will be back in season 2, but that’s only the beginning of what the show has in store as it returns. Indeed, big characters from Star Wars lore are also set to join the show’s cast in some capacity, including Ahsoka Tano, Bo-Katan Kryze and even Boba Fett (or at least someone who has Boba Fett-style armor). Baby Yoda will of course be back too, as the show continues to explore the character’s origins while revealing more about why the remnants of the Empire are so interested in getting their hands on the little green alien.

Season 2 will of course just be one more chapter in what promises to be an ongoing saga for The Mandalorian, as season 3 is set to arrive as well. As revealed by Favreau (via Variety), work on that third season is set to begin sooner rather than later. In fact, Favreau says the show can begin work before the end of 2020, as soon as star Pedro Pascal returns from Europe where he’s working on the Nicolas Cage movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. This should mean that season 3 will be ready to arrive in 2021.

As Favreau also pointed out in his talk with Variety, The Mandalorian is actually helped when it comes to dealing with COVID-related protocols by the fact that so many of its characters don’t show their faces on screen. It also helps that much of the show is shot using VR backdrops in situations where not many actors are required to be on set at the same time, and crews can also be kept small. As Favreau said:

“We’re in very small situations and oftentimes we have a lot of characters in masks. And we also have a lot of digital work that augments things. So we’re a show that’s probably well-equipped to be flexible based on the protocols that are emerging surrounding work restarting.”

Indeed there are other shows that have seen COVID protocols cause problems with production, most notably The Walking Dead, which had to change its season 10 finale and alter plans for season 11 due to restrictions on cast and crew sizes. Going by Favreau’s words however, it seems The Mandalorian will not be held back in its production, but will be able to go full steam ahead once they get the go-ahead to begin filming season 3. This is obviously incredibly great news for fans who hope new Mandalorian episodes will keep on delivering on the huge promise of season 1. But of course, season 2 has to arrive first, and indeed there is a lot of anticipation leading up to the return of The Mandalorian and its winning take on the Star Wars universe.
