The York-born defender has been in high demand among Premier League sides during the transfer window, with both Fulham and Newcastle among those to have made moves for his capture.

However, Everton made Godfrey their top target heading into the final week of the window as Carlo Ancelotti looked to add a new centre-back to his ranks at Goodison.

The Italian boss is set to be without Mason Holgate for the foreseeable future after he picked up a toe injury in pre-season, while young defender Jarrad Branthwaite is also currently sidelined.

Michael Keane and Yerry Mina have started all of the Toffees’ Premier League games this season and have helped the club make a perfect start to the new campaign.

Godfrey was a mainstay for Norwich last term as he made 30 Premier League appearances but was unable to help the Canaries from being relegated back to the Championship.

An England under-21 international, he has played five times for the Young Lions, including in both of their Euro qualifiers in September.

In other Everton news, Carlo Ancelotti has been told to U-turn over a Toffees star savaged by fans.
