Disaster Management: Japanese Govt Supports Nigeria with $4.5m

The Japanese government has extended a grant of $4.5million to Nigeria for the provision of Japanese Disaster Reduction Equipment.


The exchange of notes for the non-project grant was signed yesterday in Abuja, by the Minister/Deputy Chairman, National Planing Commission (NPC), Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman and the Charge d’ Affairs ad interim of Japan, Mr. Masaya Otsuka, at the NPC’s headquarters in Abuja.


Otsuka said that the grant will be utilised for procurement of disaster reduction equipment of high quality made by Japanese enterprises.


According to him, the equipment will be fully utilised by the National Emergency Management Commission (NEMA) to make Nigeria more resilient in the field of disaster reduction.

In his remarks, NPC Minister, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman, noted that Nigeria has experienced various degrees of disaster over the years, including flooding, fire disaster, disease epidemics, oil spillage, climate change and terrorism.


He said “Nigeria has been striving to live up to expectation in terms of disaster management. NEMA has often strived to grapple with the situation including the 2012 flooding and the adverse effects of terrorism.
manifested in the high number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).”


The minister stated that however, the resource for effective management of the occurrence are not readily available, hence the support from development partners serves as invaluable assistance.
