Muhammadu Buhari GCFR is a Nigerian politician who has been president of Nigeria since 2015. Buhari is a retired general of the Nigerian Army and served as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, after taking power in a military coup d'état.

  • Muhammadu Buhari is a Nigerian politician currently serving as the President of Nigeria, in office since 2015. Before this, he had served as Head of State from 1983 – 1985 when he was in the Nigerian Army. In addition, he was the former governor of one of the states in North East of Nigeria and one-time Federal Minister of Petroleum.

Early Life & Education

  •  Major-General Buhari was born on the 17th of December 1942 in Katsina state, Nigeria. He was raised by his mother following the death of his father, Hardo Adamu when he was only 4 years old. More so, he got to grow in a very large family considering the fact that he was the twenty-third child to his father. Considering the year he was born, one can easily know his age.

  • Buhari went to Katsina Model School and later the Government College Katsina (then known as the Katsina Provincial Secondary School).

Career

  • In 1962 He began his military journey at the age of 19 when he joined the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC). The institution was later renamed the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1964

  • He has also gone on to get more education from other institutions including the officer cadet training at Mons Officer Cadet School, Aldershot, England.

  • Then, in 1963, he became a second lieutenant and was appointed Platoon Commander of the Second Infantry Battalion in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

  • From November 1963 to January 1964, Muahammadu Buhari attended the Platoon Commanders’ Course at the Nigerian Military Training College, Kaduna.

  • In March 1976 Buhari was appointed as a Federal Commissioner for petroleum and natural resources  (a position now regarded as a ministerial position), He was appointed by General Olusegun Obasanjo (Head of State 1976 – 1979).

  • in 1977 to 1978, he became the chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation after its creation.

  • During his leadership, there was a notable development in the petroleum sector. For instance, the administration built over 21 petroleum storage deports all over the country. It also constructed pipeline networks, refineries, and oil pipelines and made connections between each of them.

Head of State

  • In 1983, Major-General Buhari and Major-General Tunde Idiagbon were selected to lead the country by middle and high-ranking military officers after a successful military coup d’etat that overthrew civilian President Shehu Shagari.

  • His regime established a Supreme Military Council, Federal Executive Council, Council of States, and other councils. He posed a great threat against corruption and indiscipline. Hundred of politicians, businessmen, and officials who took part in corrupt practices were jailed. Only those who met certain conditions were released.

  • With his zero tolerance for indiscipline, he launched War Against Indiscipline (WAI) on March 20, 1984. WAI was launched to enforce obedience to rules and regulations of the country.

  • For instance, civilians were made to form queues in bus stops, civil servants who arrive late to work were forced to do frog jumps and cheating in exams attracted 21 years imprisonment. The press and trade unions were not left out.

  • In 1985 Buhari’s government was ousted by General Ibrahim Babangida. He was thrown into jail in Benin City, where he had restricted access to things and people. Finally, he was released in 1998.

  • He unsuccessfully ran for the office of President of Nigeria in 2003, 2007, and 2011 general elections. 

  • In December 2014, he emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the March 2015 general elections. Buhari won the election, defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. 

  • This marked the first time in the history of Nigeria that an incumbent president lost to an opposition candidate in a general election. He was sworn in on 29 May 2015. 

  • In February 2019, Buhari was re-elected President, defeating his closest rival Atiku Abubakar by over 3 million votes.

  • Buhari got married to his first wife, Safinatu Yusuf in 1971. Safinatu became the first lady when Buhari served as the Head of State Between December 1983 – August 1985 With her, Buhari has five children. They later divorced in 1988. 

  • Buhari then married Aisha Halilu in 1989. Aisha currently holds the office of the first lady. And, their union is blessed with five children

  • With both his present and former wives, Muhammadu Buhari has 10 children. Including Halima, Zarah, Yusuf, Aisha, and Amina.
