Superstore: America Ferrera’s Exit Delayed, First Look At Season 6 Revealed

America Ferrera delays her exit from the workplace comedy Superstore, and the series offers a look at upcoming season 6. Starring Ferrera, Superstore debuted on NBC in 2015 and featured Ferrera in her second headlining position for the network following the success of Ugly Betty. In addition to portraying the starring role of Amy Sosa, a single mother working her way up the ladder of the Cloud 9 Superstore, Ferrera also serves as the executive producer of the workplace sitcom.

Created by Justin Spitzer, Superstore follows a group of oddball employees who work at Cloud 9 store 1217, a discount warehouse store in St. Louis, Missouri. During its run, Superstore has garnered praise for doling out hilarious moments while tackling topical issues. These include immigration, maternity leave, accessible healthcare, and pay equality. Earlier this year, Ferrera announced she would exit the series at the end of season 5 to pursue other projects. Amid coronavirus concerns, production halted on Superstore season 5, leaving Amy’s farewell storyline up in the air. Now, it appears Ferrera will have the chance at a proper send-off.

Per TVLine, Ferrera will appear in two episodes of season 6. Reportedly, Superstore season 6 will incorporate the coronavirus pandemic into the plotline and pick up after the season 5 cliffhanger. Co-showrunners Jonathan Green and Gabe Miller expressed excitement that Ferrera would return for season 6 and that the sitcom’s landmark 100th episode will serve as Ferrera’s farewell episode. Check out the first look at the essential employees of Superstore from season 6 below.

“There’s so much we wanted to explore with COVID and how it changes the world of Cloud 9 that we decided to focus on that in the premiere, with Amy starting her new job remotely while still trying to manage the store”.https://i0.wp.com/storage.waploaded.com/images/584c8671da49ebb5767126c095baca3f.jpg

Elaborating on season 6’s plotline, Green and Miller revealed that season 6 would pick up where season 5 left off, which showed the outbreak had delayed Amy and Jonah’s relocation to California. Premiering October 22, Superstore season 6 will feature various time jumps and focus on the characters navigating the hurdles of panicking customers, new rules, being deemed essential workers at Cloud 9, and bidding farewell to store manager Amy.

Ferrera has been regarded as the anchor of Superstore, both on and off-screen. Ferrara has not stated if she would appear in the future series finale of Superstore, but the show could leave the door open for Amy to make a return. Of course, Ferrera opting to return for a proper farewell at the beginning of season 6 will jump-start the next installment of the sitcom, while allowing fans a chance for some closure. Superstore season 6 will feature a new batch of misadventures for the essential employees of Cloud 9.
