Phil Lord & Chris Miller's Connected Movie Release Delayed Indefinitely

Phil Lord and Chris Miller's upcoming movie Connected has been delayed indefinitely. The talented directing and writing duo are known for many comedic works, but animation has long been their area of expertise. They've written and directed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The LEGO Movie, which were both hits, and then produced the sequels and spinoffs of each. Most recently, Lord and Miller's animation experience had them become heavily involved with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The duo has a number of projects in the works that they will direct, but the next movie that Lord and Miller's names will be on is Connected. They're producing the movie and it's being directed by Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe. The film followa follows Katie Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson) and her family as a tech uprising happens during a road trip to take Katie to college. Sony released a trailer for Connected at the start of 2020, with the movie slated to hit theaters in October. However, that will no longer be the case.

According to Deadline, Sony has delayed Connected indefinitely. The movie previously had an October 23 release date set. There is no immediate time frame for when Connected will be released or when Sony will announce the new date. As a result of this change, 20th Century and Disney's Death on the Nile is the only wide release slated to hit theaters on this date.https://i0.wp.com/storage.waploaded.com/images/cbb9a3845a2c3a909a0e9353b04e6d39.jpg

The reason for Connected's delay is likely due to the current state of theaters and the movie business. Cinemas have been open for the last few weeks, but the box office has been disappointing for most films. Tenet has received a bulk of the attention and Warner Bros.' decision to not reveal daily box office figures is a further indictment on how the film is performing. WB has since delayed their next big blockbuster, Wonder Woman 1984, from October to December, and now Sony is following suit in delaying their biggest October release in Connected.

It is understandable why Sony came to the decision to delay Connected, but those looking forward to the movie are now left with uncertainty over when it will be released. It is currently TBD and the ever-changing landscape of the movie business doesn't even guarantee that Connected will hit theaters down the road. Sony could decide to release the film on PVOD in the next few weeks to give the studio some cash and families a new movie to enjoy. But, until Sony confirms what is happening next with Connected, we'll just have to wait and see if it gets a new 2020 date or is held for 2021, no matter how it is released.
