Hip-Hop Vampire Drama Thirst In Development At HBO

A new hip-hop vampire drama entitled Thirst is currently under development at HBO. The project's high-concept idea, as it relates to the undead, echoes HBO's late-2000s camp classic True Blood, which arguably paved the way for the network's current successful lineup. Despite the recent decline in popularity with vampires in media, HBO's original programming has not seemed to slow down in terms of appeal and success.

Variety reports that Leah Benavides Rodriguez and Carlito Rodriguez will serve as writers, executive producers, and showrunners on Thirst, which is being produced by Macro Television Studios. Benavides Rodriguez and Rodriguez have credits writing for several television series, including the music drama Empire. Thirst will also revolve around the music industry, in particular the Atlanta rap scene.

“Music has been integral to both our lives, and Thirst is the perfect opportunity to blend genres, while exploring the intersection of fame, culture and what it means to be American," read a joint statement by Benavides Rodriguez and Rodriguez. Thirst's premise is itself based on an original concept by executive producer and former VH1 creative director Kevin Jordan. The series will be the first to come out of his first-look deal with Macro.

Thirst follows a bright, yet arrogant, Atlanta rapper whose dreams of making it big may come true when he joins the scene's hottest group. His ambition, however, blinds him to the group's big secret: they're a family of vampires with a lineage going back centuries.
