Supernatural Season 15 Finale Changes Didn’t Affect Main Storyline

The showrunner on Supernatural says the changes made to the season 15 finale didn't affect the characters, plot, or mythology of the show's ending. The show's interrupted final season continues, after being delayed in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, in early October, with the finale airing in November. The trailer for the second half of the final season promises an emotional end to the long-running favorite, which stars Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles as the Winchester brothers. At 15 seasons, the show is the longest-running live-action fantasy series in TV history.

While the on-screen action promises an emotional storyline, the cast and crew have posted several behind-the-scenes shots proving that things have been just as emotional in real life as the actors move on from their job of 15 years. The pain was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which caused the final episodes to be shot after COVID-19 protocols for shooting had been established. Ackles also revealed that the final two episodes had to be changed due to the pandemic, causing many fans to speculate just what had changed.

However, co-showrunner Andrew Dabb reassured TV Line that the script changes were just tweaks made to align with coronavirus filming restrictions. Dabb said the tweaks were nothing to do with the storyline, but more in terms of adapting to the new filming conditions in a pandemic world. The showrunner goes on to say that there is nothing "fundamentally different" about the finale, just that the scenes are more "streamlined" to feature fewer actors and making shooting easier. You can read his full comments below:

[The changes] didn’t affect the core parts. We’re still doing everything we wanted to do from a character, plot, mythology standpoint. In some cases, we had to simplify the [scene] to get there. For example, for the finale, we had a big, super extravagant thing planned for that episode, and it wasn’t feasible. But we found an alternative to get to the same place, plot-wise and, more importantly, emotionally, that worked great. So it’s about being adaptable. We had to do some rewriting, but nothing that changed fundamentally what the show is or where it was going. The storyline is unchanged. Like I said, some of the scene work is different. There aren’t as many bad guys in a scene as we would normally have because of COVID restrictions. But in terms of plot, in terms of character, nothing is fundamentally different.https://i0.wp.com/storage.waploaded.com/images/176816080ced693b80dd272a36321052.jpg

For fans, it's good news that nothing about the finale has had to change. However, some will likely be disappointed that the promised showdown between the Winchesters and God (Rob Benedict) won't be as spectacular as initially planned. However, it could mean the finale is more emotional, relying on the characters and the importance of the event rather than attempting to make it as big as possible.

Dabb's comments also reflect how the coronavirus pandemic has forced movie and TV creatives to change the way they think about movies. From big blockbusters like The Batman, which is reportedly no longer shooting on location, to smaller shows, and everything in between, including Supernatural, nothing has been left unscathed by the virus. Thankfully for fans of the CW show, it didn't cause any significant changes.
