PS5 Launches With PlayStation Plus Collection, Adding Huge PS4 Library

Sony has announced the PlayStation Plus Collection, which will give the PlayStation 5 a huge library of PS4 games at launch. The question of PlayStation backward compatibility has been asked since the PS5 was first revealed, and Sony has been mercurial with its answers about what the system can do.

The Xbox Series S/X will have Smart Delivery and Game Pass at launch, which means that people who buy the console will have instant access to a huge library of games, both through free upgrades of games they own and the subscription-based Game Pass library. Sony has been less clear regarding how PS4 games will work on PS5, as well as whether games from older PlayStation home consoles and handhelds will have any compatibility. The PS5 might have better exclusives at launch, with Spider-Man: Miles Morales being a system seller for some, but the larger library of titles available for the Xbox Series S/X at launch will be more of a draw to some consumers this holiday season.

The PS5 showcase had a huge announcement where backward compatibility is concerned, as Sony has revealed its answer to Smart Delivery and Xbox Game Pass, and it involves a service that many fans likely already have. The PlayStation Plus Collection which will allow new PS5 owners to instantly download and play a selection of the best PS4 games. PlayStation shared the news on its YouTube channel, giving fans a glimpse of the games they can expect to make the cross-gen leap.

The games shown in the trailer are

  • God of War

  • Bloodborne

  • Monster Hunter World

  • Final Fantasy XV

  • Fallout 4

  • Mortal Kombat X

  • Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

  • Ratchet & Clank

  • Days Gone

  • Until Dawn

  • Detroit: Become Human

  • Battlefield 1

  • inFamous Second Son

  • Batman Arkham Knight

  • The Last Guardian

  • The Last of Us: Remastered

  • Persona 5

  • Resident Evil VII: Biohazard

Sony still hasn't revealed exactly what its PlayStation Plus Collection will entail. It's not clear how and when new games will be added, or whether future free games included with PlayStation Plus will necessarily be playable on PS5. What is has said is that the games will be available to download rather than stream, so it's not a replacement for PlayStation Now.

This is a huge incentive for purchasing a PS5 and subscribing to PlayStation Plus, especially as Sony has confirmed that it comes at no extra cost. The PlayStation Plus Collection might not have as many games as Game Pass or Smart Delivery, but the quality of titles is hard to deny, especially with so many PlayStation exclusives like Bloodborne being on the list. It's an exciting time to be a PlayStation fan, as Sony is finally countering Xbox's most highly-demanded feature.
