Fortnite Comes To PS5 On Launch Day With Cross-Progression

Fortnite is making its way to the PlayStation 5, and it will be available on launch day. While the announcement came to no one's surprise, the PlayStation 5 showcase was the first time Fortnite has been confirmed for release on a next-gen platform.

Like GTA 5 and Skyrim, Fortnite was expected to make its way to the PlayStation 5 eventually due to its massive player base and presence on every currently available console. Fortnite fans have put more cumulative time into the cartoonish battle royale than humans have been on the Earth, and it remains one of the most-watched games on Twitch and YouTube. Its free-to-play nature and wide availability have drawn in a record number of players, and it only makes sense that a game of this size would continue to be made available as new consoles emerge.

During the PlayStation 5 live games showcase, the screen faded to black as the iconic horn of the Battle Bus blared. The Fortnite PS5 trailer showed gameplay of Season 4 running on Unreal Engine 4, and it looks gorgeous. A short montage of action-packed clips followed, capped off with a white screen with black text stating that Fortnite would be available on PlayStation 5 at launch, making it one of a select few titles PS5 owners can play on November 12th. A tweet from the official Fortnite account also ensured that players with Epic Games accounts would be able to carry over their progress and purchases to the PS5.

While Epic Games confirmed during the Summer Games Fest earlier this year that Fortnite would be making its way to next-gen consoles, the game still hasn't gotten a positive confirmation of a next-gen Xbox port. Fortnite will make its way to the Xbox Series X/S eventually, and will more than likely be a launch title as well, but it's nice to have confirmation of Fortnite on at least one next-gen platform.

Despite Fortnite being several years old now, the visual quality and clarity of the gameplay shown in the trailer is gorgeous. Everything from character models to The Island itself looks just a little crisper on the PS5. In another, more surprising graphical upgrade, Fortnite is also adding Ray Tracing capabilities to make the game look even more unreal on new Nvidia GPUs. It may not be the most impressive game at today's PS5 reveal by a long shot, but Fortnite's presence on the next-gen console is something that will likely make a lot of players that much more excited to pick one up.
