Childhood Story, Early Life, Football Career

Jürgen Klopp was the last of 3 kids born to Norbert and Elisabeth Klopp in Stuttgart, West Germany. His father worked as a salesman and was formerly a goalkeeper. He was initiated to football by his father while growing up.

During his early years, Klopp admits he desired to become a doctor, however, he never felt smart enough. That sentiment was reflected in his headmaster’s remark to Klopp when he was handed out his A-level certificate. In his remarks, his headmaster expressed hope that Klopp succeeds in football because if it didn’t, the future wasn’t so bright for young Klopp. Klopp went on to play football for various German clubs such as FC Pforzheim, Viktoria Sindlingen, Eintracht Frankfurt II and Rot-Weiss Frankfurt during his adolescent years.

While young Klopp played amateur football, he worked at a video rental store. While he played no professional football for Eintracht Frankfurt, Klopp attended the Goethe University of Frankfurt. During that period, Klopp managed the football affairs of Frankfurt D-Juniors. Klopp completed his tertiary education, graduating with a diploma with a major in Sports Science from Goethe University of Frankfurt. His football career continued, with him getting signed by Mainz 05 in 1990. While at the club, Klopp switched from striking to defence, precisely in 1995. In 2001, Klopp retired from football at Mainz 05, as the clubs record highest-goalscorer.

Profile, Teams Coached, Managerial Career, Trophies Won

Mainz 05 (2001–2008)

After he retired from football, Mainz 05 appointed Klopp as manager of the club in February 2001. Following his take over of the clubs managerial position, Klopp won six of his seven first games as manager of the club, while ending the season as 14th in the league. His first full season as manager, Klopp finished 4th in the league, for the 2001/02 season. The same occurred in the 2002/03 season. He finally finished third in the 2003/04 season, which earned the club promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time.

In their first season in the Bundesliga, Klopp helped Mainz 05 finished in the 11th position. During the 2005/06 season, Klopp finished 11th in the Bundesliga and led Mainz to the UEFA Cup where they lost in the first round. At the end of the 2006/07 season, Mainz 05 was relegated. The next season, after failing to achieve promotion, Klopp resigned as manager of the club.

Borussia Dortmund (2008–2015)

After Klopp was consulted to serve as manager of the German club, Borussia Dortmund in May 2008, he signed a 2-year contract with the club. During the first season as the manager of the club, Klopp won the German Super Cup and finished 6th in the league. In this second season as manager of the club, the club finished 5th in the league. At the end of the 2010/11 season, with the youngest squad in the league, Klopp led Dortmund to Bundesliga glory.

The following season, Klopp repeated the feat. In May 2012, Klopp led the team to win the DFB-Pokal. After a dismal 2012/13 season which saw them eliminated at the semifinals of the Champions League, Klopp signed a contract extension with Dortmund which will see him stay at the club till June 2018, in the 2013/14 season. That season, Klopp led the club to win the German Super Cup. After winning the 2014/15 German Super Cup, Klopp announced that he’ll step down as club manager at the conclusion of the season.

Liverpool (2015–date)

In October 2015, Klopp signed a three-year contract with EPL club Liverpool. In his first season as manager in charge of the club, Klopp led the team to the League Cup final which they lost. He also led Liverpool to their first final in European competition since 2007, the UEFA Europa League final which they lost. He finished 8th in the league. In June 2016, Klopp along with his coaching staff signed a six-year contract extension with Liverpool.

His second season as manager of the club, saw the club finish in the 4th position in the league, making them eligible for Champions League qualification. In his first Champions League with Liverpool, Klopp guided the club to the final of the tournament, which saw them lose 3-1 to Real Madrid. The huge loss led to Klopp signing Van Dijk for a world record amount of £75 million for a defender. Klopp also added top players such as goalkeeper Alisson Becker and forward Xherdan Shaqiri, to his squad. In the 2018/19 season, after winning all of the matches for December, Klopp was named Premier League Coach of the Month.

Despite Liverpool’s top form, they lost out in various domestic cups. But they made up for their loss by claiming the Champions League after defeating English rivals Tottenham Hotspurs 2-0, marking his first Champions League win, and his first trophy with Liverpool. In the 2019/20 season, after losing the FA Community Shield, Klopp went on to win the UEFA Super Cup. He went on to win the Premier League Coach of the Month in August for the fourth time. In September 2019, Klopp was awarded as the Best FIFA Men’s Coach award.

This is a huge increase compared to the £4 million he earned while at Borussia Dortmund. Klopp currently drives an Opel Insignia which is worth roughly £18,000—a very simple car for a man of his calibre.
