COVID-19: Many Nigerian Students Are Stranded Abroad – ISF

Since the beginning of this year, students studying abroad or those who just secured admission are seriously been affected by the pandemics.

Many self-sponsored students and those on partial scholarship could not afford to pay rent and at the same time pay to be evacuated back to Nigeria thereby making them stranded in many countries of the world.

For example, a notable Scholarship Forum in Nigeria, The International Scholarship Forum (ISF) noted on a tweet this evening that TVC news reported through the President of the Nigeria Students Association in South Africa that over 174 Nigerian students studying in South Africa want to come home but could not afford the exorbitant amount of $840 (roughly # 400k = 1-way ticket), billed to them by airpeace through the Nigeria Government. It was claimed that the amount they asked them to pay was far greater than d initial amount of less than $500 (for return ticket before the lockdown).

I think when it comes to the issue of welfarism of Nigerians, our Government should wake up and act like other countries of the world. They should rather assist these students by either subsidising the amount or evacuating them free of charge.
