The groups, under the auspices of Just Energy Transition Coalition, stated this yesterday in Port Harcourt during a joint meeting conveyed by Environment Rights Action (ERA).

The Head, Environment and Conservation Unit of the Centre for Environment and Human Rights Development, Dr. Kabari Sam, said if the nation must recover from its depressed economy, there was need to develop deliberate policy that could guard a switch from dependence on fossil fuel to renewable energy.

Sam said that when the policy is achieved, it would reduce hazardous carbons threatening the region’s environment, create jobs, improve quality of living and ensure good health, among others.

In the same vein, spokesperson of the coalition, Lolo Fubara, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure the survival of Nigeria as an entity by putting in motion the process for policy realignment among four key development policies, including the Vision 20:2020, the Economic Growth and Recovery Plan, (ERGP), Nigeria’s Nationally Determine Contribution (NDC) released under the Paris Climate Accord and the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan 2020, which is a road map to post COVID-19 recovery.

She also urged the President to support the use of renewable energy by encouraging the transformation of the energy systems from the local council level and provide tax and financial incentives to enable long-term acquisition plans for renewable energy.
