1. Potato Chip: Are you aware that this delicious snack was actually made out of spite? The story is as far back as 1853 in New York when a chef was extremely annoyed with a customer. The diner continue to return the thickly cut Fresh potatoes back to the kitchen for being too soggy. They have had enough; Crum sliced the potatoes super thin, fried them throughout till they were crispy and doused them in a large amount of salt. This trick became something terrific today. It backfired as the diner ended up loving it and hence there come potato chips.

2. Friction Matches: This is the lovely ease of controlled fire in just an instant. In 1826, there was an English Chemist named John Walker who was preparing a mixture that can create a fire. Meanwhile, as at that time, fire and explosions could be created on mixing certain mixtures together but it was actually nowhere close to lighting it on a stick of wood. Later, Walker found a dried lump of the mixture that he was working on, on one end of a wooden stick. As he wants to scrape it off, he accidentally gave way to a flame. Aside the fact that Walker’s matches aren’t the same with the ones we are using today. It is a statement of fact that that was the birth of match sticks we are using today across the world.

3. Microwaves: It is important for the entire world to appreciate Percy Spencer for the wonder which is now known as microwave. During the Second World War, Spencer was working with a company that is known as Raytheon that designed microwave radar transmitters. It was during the time that he was working around these transmitters that he noticed the candy bar in his pocket melt. That was the big “Eureka” moment in the invention of microwaves.

4. The Popsicle: 11 years old Frank Epperson forgot something which led to the invention of popsicles. On one cold night, Epperson forgot a mixture of sugary soda powder and water with a wooden stirrer in the glass. In the next morning, he woke up to a frozen treat that he devoured and later started making it for his friends. He named it an Episcle and it began selling fast and made a business out of it. It was made for kids to enjoy and the name was derived from the words – pop’s icicle.

5. Velcro: There was a Swiss Engineer and an amateur mountaineer named George de Mestral who was hiking in the woods along with his dogs in 1948 when he established the idea we all know as Velcro today. However, we have heard of two different sides of the story. The first one is that burrs kept sticking to his dog as at the hike and the second was that he noticed the burrs sticking on to his clothes. Either of the two narrations, it was actually burrs that caught his attention that birthed the journey to the invention of the Velcro. Meanwhile, the large-scale popularity of Velcro didn’t come until 1960s when NASA decides to make use of it.  

6. Play-Doh: Before the commencement of the Second World War, most homes were typically heated with coal which usually left soot stains around the walls. The invention of Play-Doh was done by the soap manufacturing company Kutol Products’ Joseph McViker and Noah and it was initially invented for cleaning the stains off the walls. Meanwhile, after the war, most homes started using natural gas which reduces the use of the scoot cleaning clay from Kutol Products. This made the company to go bankrupted but sometimes around early 1950s, Vicker got to know of his sister, a class teacher was using the product as modeling dough in her classroom. This gave adequate quest for re-invention of his soot cleaning product into the friendly kids’ product that is now used today worldwide.
