The Grammy awards just ended in Los Angeles and for the first time in a while, a lot of Nigerians had interest in the show.
Nigeria’s Burna Boy was nominated for the best International album alongside fellow African, Angelique Kidjo and many Nigerians felt he could clinch the award. His “African Giant” album has made waves around the world since it’s release in 2019.
Burna boy ultimately lost the award, but many Nigerians are unaware that other Nigerians have won the award in the past. They include:
Sikiru Adepoju who won the award in 1991 as part of of Mickey Hart’s group Planet Drum, whose title album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album.
Olusegun Olumide Adeola who has 14 Grammy nominations to his name and has won four. His song, “Kiss From A Rose” earned him three Grammy awards in 1996 and in 2011 he nabbed his fourth “Imagine”. He holds one of the highest numbers of Grammy awards by a Nigerian.
Helend Adu, a native of Ibadan she earned her third Grammy in 2002 with “Lovers Rock” in the Best Pop Vocal Album and bagged her fourth in 2011 with “Soldier of Love” for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals.
Other Nigerians who have won it include; Lekan Babalola, Hakeem Seriki and Kevin Olusola.
