Rooney misses England training

The Manchester United striker and international colleague Ryan Bertrand have been rested ahead of Spain friendly, but the pair are not ruled out
England captain Wayne Rooney and defender Ryan Bertrand missed training on the eve of Tuesday’s friendly against Spain.

The Manchester United forward and Southampton left-back are both nursing minor injuries and have not been ruled out of taking on Julen Lopetegui's side at Wembley.

England's numbers were bolstered by 17-year-old Tottenham midfielder Dylan Duncan for their session at the Premier League club's training base.

Spurs striker Harry Kane withdrew from the squad on Sunday to work on fitness issues, with Gareth Southgate telling FATV :“Harry Kane has gone back to Tottenham. Harry reported for us last week and obviously hadn’t played a full game for seven weeks, so it’s important that he gets a different training programme to what we’re going to follow over the next couple of days.


“We’re really grateful to Tottenham for letting us have him for the qualifier. Once we had assessed our injury status, and the fact that we were fine and covered and what we would do for this game, then the sessions that we are going to do are not what Harry needs at this moment in time–having had such a long lay-off."

Southgate is overseeing the final match of his interim spell in charge versus Spain, but is tipped to become Sam Allardyce's full-time successor.
