Drogba hat trick

The former Chelsea star scored the first three goals of the evening as the Montreal side cruised to a 5-1 win over Jim Curtin's Philadelphia Union

Didier Drogba has been a part-time player of sorts for Montreal Impact this season, appearing in just 12 of 21 matches. But when he is in the starting XI, there's no questioning the bang for the buck.

Having gone nearly two months without finding the net, Drogba ended that drought in emphatic fashion on Saturday, notching a hat trick in Impact's 5-1 win over Philadelphia Union.

Drogba now has a stunning 19 goals in 23 regular season matches since joining last summer.

The convincing victory served as a statement of intent for the Canadian side, who moved to within one point of second-placed Union in the Eastern Conference standings.

Drogba, who missed three matches earlier this month with a thigh injury, opened the scoring in the 19th minute at Stade Saputo when he buried a cross from Ambroise Oyongo at the far post.

The 38-year-old made it 2-0 three minutes before halftime, pouncing on a rebound after Ignacio Piatti forced an impressive save from Union goalkeeper Andre Blake.

And Drogba completed his hat trick in the 52nd minute, connecting with a through ball from Piatti and coolly slotting past Blake.

Chris Pontius pulled one back for Union in the 72nd minute, but Piatti and Matteo Mancosu added late insurance strikes to ensure a comfortable win for the Impact.
