NFA Suspends Federation Cup Finals In Anambra

The Nigerian Football Association (NFA) on Friday announced the suspension of the final of the Federation Cup in Anambra, due to hold on April 5.

The suspension was because the two factions of the state Football Association were organising separate versions of the finals following the leadership crisis that have rocked the association.

The final match of the Mike Umeh led faction was to come up between Ifeanyi Ubah FC Nnewi and Ikpeazu Roundtable Onitsha at the Nero stadium Nanka.

The other match, organised by Jude Obikwelu faction, was to be between Smithcity FC Awka and Cardinal FC Onitsha at the Rojenny stadium Oba.

The board have been divided between Mike Umeh, the chairman of the former board and Jude Obikwelu his vice, with each faction organising separate elections and laying claim to legitimacy.

Attempt by the Anambra government to intervene in the matter yielded no fruitful result.

According to a press release from the NFA, the suspension of the competition was made to address the leadership crisis that have rocked the state FA.

The release, which was signed by the secretary of the federation, Mohammed Sanusi, further stated that a team of the NFA elections monitoring committee and the chairman of States FA chairmen would visit Anambra to find a lasting solution to the impasse.

It said the competition would remain suspended till the matter was fully and amicably resolved.

“We have had to take the decision to suspend the final of the Federation Cup competition in Anambra State as a result of the leadership crisis in that State.

“The programme will remain suspended until the matter is resolved.

“The chairman of the NFA States’ elections monitoring committee and the Chairman of FA Chairmen, Ibrahim Gusau, will travel to Anambra State to sit down with the two contending parties and resolve the logjam,” Sanusi said

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the election conducted by Umeh within the Feb 28 time frame was invalidated by the NFA, while Obikwelu;s faction was not able to beat the deadline. (NAN)
