2-Step Authentication added to WhatsApp through beta update

With version 2.16.341, popular messenger app WhatsApp introduces two-factor authentication. The feature is currently available only in the app's beta version, but it's bound to ship with the public release sooner rather than later. The option is included together with menu items, such as Privacy, Security, and deleting your WhatsApp account.

Two-step verification requires a passcode when registering a phone number, and users must add an email account to be used when resetting their six-digit entry codes. But once registration is complete, no one will be able to register a WhatsApp account using your number without providing the passcode or email account.

Another new feature available in the beta build adds audio messages that can be played in the background. Thus, you can switch to another conversation window or open a different app and the audio from WhatsApp will keep playing. There's no information when the update will exit its beta status, but once it does so, it will be available as an app store download. Meanwhile, members of the WhatsApp beta program are able to get the update from the Google Play Store on Android right now.
