Revealed!! Read How Foreign Exchange Rate Is Affecting Power Supply

Engr Abiodun Akindele, the regional technical manager, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), on Thursday, November 24, attributed the high foreign exchange rate to the recent poor electricity supply in the region, Daily Trust reports.

Akindele made this known when he appeared before the Ogun state House of Assembly.

Engr Abiodun Akindele of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company says that the high foreign exchange rate is the cause of poor power supply.

Addressing the lawmakers, Akindele lamented the operations of the IBEDC has been affected due to the high foreign exchange rate.

He noted that the company is facing difficulties providing consumers with quality service and has problems in the procurement of equipment and metering devices.

Akindele also complained about the shortage of energy from power Generating Companies (GENCO) to Distribution Companies (DISCOS) for onward transmission.

However, he assured that the company would continue to strive hard to provide quality service to its customers across the state.

According to him, the IBEDC has embarked on sensitization programmes to orientate its customers on its plans and activities, as well as cautioning energy consumers to shun the act of giving gratifications to staff of the company, while encouraging them to always inform the company whenever communities wanted to donate any power equipment.

In his response, Hon Suraj Ishola Adekunbi, speaker of the House, represented by the majority leader, Hon Adeyinka Mafe charged Akindele and his management team to put in place more proactive measures to meet its obligations to its consumers in the state.

Adekunbi stated that the meeting was sequel to the complaints received from the people of the state on the activities of the company on the need to encourage people and communities who assist the company in the procurement and installation of equipment like transformer to give them opportunity to use power free of charge between 6 months to 12 months.

Meanwhile, the current minister of power, works and housing, Babatunde Fashola has warned Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOS) to stop blackmailing the federal government.

Apparently the DISCOS were blackmailing the FG over outstanding debts allegedly owed them by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Speaking through his special adviser on communications, Mr Hakeem Bello, on Tuesday, November 22, the minister made it very clear that the blackmail would not be tolerated. Thus he gave the warning at a meeting with power sector operators in the country.
