Police to fight cattle rustlers, criminals with sniffer dogs

The Nigeria Police Force, NPF on Tuesday said animals, such as sniffer dogs would soon be deployed in rural areas and flash points of states with high incidents of cattle rustling to arrest the problem and prevent herdsmen and farmers’ clashes.

It specified that the trained sniffer dogs would be used, henceforth, in checking crime and criminality in the country.

This disclosure was made known by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris on Tuesday, during the passing out ceremony of 19 Nigeria Air Force, NAF, personnel from the Police Dog Breeding Training Centre, Dei-Dei, Abuja, and inauguration of three air-conditioned dog trailers.


The IGP, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General, Operations, Joshak Habila, said, “The IG has approved the deployment of K9 (police animal department) section to flashpoints across the country to stop cattle rustling and check illegal arms and drugs trafficking.

“A trained dog could do the job of 20 personnel; the sniffer dogs are indispensable to the nation’s security architecture.

“The training of the Air Force personnel is part of the collaborations between the police and other security agencies and other security services are free to use the K9 facility for training,” the IGP added.

In his remarks, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIGP, Force Animal Branch, Charles Ugomuoh, said “Four officers and 15 other ranks were tutored for three months on the patrol dog handlers course as a background for the establishment of the NAF K9 unit.


“The trainees were exposed to the international best practices in dog handling, including K9 security deployment and seminars at the University of Abuja, shooting range practices with their dogs in operation, among others.

“The K9 operations would now be extended to remote areas and other flash points in the country to fight crime and criminality and to facilitate the police zero tolerance for cattle rustling, with the acquisition of three air-conditioned dog trailers.”
