Senate visits Customs, uncovers shady deals

The Senate through its committee on Customs, Excise and Tariff has uncovered how automobile giant, Volkswagen Nigeria Limited has been importing its brand of vehicles rather than assembling them in Nigeria.

This was revealed during the committee’s oversight visit to Lagos and Ogun States Commands of the Nigerian Customs Service.

The committee also discovered over 1000 uncleared containers in Ikorodu owned by Delta and Jigawa states government, which have been at the Customs Service and Nigeria Port Authority’s custody for the past 10 years.

Addressing Journalists, Chairman of the committee, Senator Hope Uzodinma said “the Senate will not leave any stone unturned” in its bid to exercise the constitutional powers conferred on it.

According to him, “the Act to amend the Nigerian Customs Service will be properly reviewed”, even as he said public hearing would be conducted by the committee to appropriately amend it.

DAILY POST reports that the committee also visited Seme Border in Benin Republic, Idiroko ?and Tincan Ports, where the clearing agents expressed dissatisfaction over the failure of Customs to partner with the Union.
