World Teachers’ Day: Senator Utazi makes strong case for welfare at all levels

As Teachers all over the world celebrate their special day, the Senator representing Enugu North senatorial district, Barr. Utazi Chukwuka has called on government at all levels to make the welfare of teachers a priority.
Coming under order 43 of the Senate’s standing rules, Senator Utazi said a situation whereby the government would pay all the civil servants down to local government staff before paying primary or secondary schools teachers was very miserable and discouraging.

The Senator, who identified the noble roles teachers play in the society, also condemned the poor handling of teachers’ welfare in the education system.

“I am a trained teacher, a political scientist and a barrister. But today I want to talk to you as a Teacher. The way we handle the welfare of teachers in the society is not encouraging,” Senator Utazi said.

The seasoned teacher turned senator also canvassed that professionally-trained teachers should be made to head units, departments and ministries of education at both federal, state and local government levels.

In his ruling, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, while congratulating Nigerian teachers on their special day, also called on the government at all levels to also accord priority to teachers’ welfare.

Meanwhile, a bill for an Act to provide for the Establishment of the Nigerian Independent Warehouse Regulatory Agency and Other Related Matters 2016 (SB. 255) standing in the name of Senator Sam Egwu (Ebonyi North) passed through second reading on Wednesday.
