Sack appointed chairmen, non-performing Commissioners; conduct council polls – Group urges Lalong

A group under the aegis of Coalition for the Defence of Democracy, CDD, on Tuesday called on Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State to set up machinery for the immediate conduct of Local Government polls in the state.
The group made the call through its secretary, Prince Miaphen, while briefing journalists in Jos, the state capital.

CDD lamented the absence of democratically-elected local government chairmen and councillors, and called for the immediate sack of the appointed management committee chairmen of the 17 councils of the state.

The group maintained that the current crop of management committee chairmen, who have spend closed to one year in office, have no respect for the will of the people at the grassroots.

“If elected chairmen and councillors were put in place there will be development and the dividends of democracy will trickled down to the grassroots as the people are seriously yearning for change and inclusive economic growth.

“Democracy must begin at the grassroots or else the yearning and aspiration of the people will be roundly subverted”, the group stressed.

The Coalition also called on the Governor to sack non-performing commissioners in in his cabinet, who they described as “a burden and cog” in the wheel of development and economic growth of the state.

According to the group, at a time of economic recession “ineptitude and poor performance” should not be tolerated in any measure.
