Recession: Niger subsidizes prices of grains, others by 50 per cent

Niger State Government has flagged off sales of N183 million worth of grains at 50 per cent subsidy, to reduce people’s hardship in the current economic recession.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that selling at the subsidised rate will be cheaper than the current market price of grains in the state.

Speaking at the occasion on Saturday, Gov. Sani Bello of Niger, said that the intervention was coming against the persistent hike in prices of food items due to the economic situation in the country.

Bello said that the sales of staple food items at subsidised rates were palliative measures toward easing the high costs of foods across major markets in the state.

“Foods and shelter are considered to be very important things in life. A lot of people have problems in buying foods, especially during festive periods.

“`We feel the pains of our people and that is why we made it a priority to embark on the sale of grains across the 25 Local Government Councils.

“The sale of these grains at subsidised rate is part of government’s effort to cushion people’s hardship,’’ he said.

Bello, however, said that the grains would be sold to the less-privileged and “not to people that want to buy and resell’’.

He urged the committee overseeing the sales of the grains to strictly monitor the process to ensure that the food items get to the actual persons.

NAN reports that the sale of food items, which included rice and maize, would be done at designated centres across 274 wards in the state.

Meanwhile, Bello has described the victory of Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governor-elect of Edo State as a reward for dedication and commitment to service by the ruling party in the state.

Bello in a congratulatory message to the governor-elect said the victory of Obaseki at the polls was a testimony that the people of Edo State appreciated the developmental progress recorded in the state in the last 8 years.

The message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Malam Jibrin Baba Ndace, advised the governor-elect to ensure that he build on the solid foundation already la!d by Gov. Adams Oshoimhole by taking the state to the next level.

“I want to congratulate Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Edo State governor-elect and Philip Shaibu deputy governor-elect on their victory at the just concluded governorship election in the state. Your track record as a seasoned technocrat and your antecedents as an astute administrator must have informed your choice by Edo people.

“Your emergence at the polls as the governor-elect in the keenly contested election was a testimony of the confidence the people have in you, as a team player whose contributions to Edo state development are outstanding.

“As the people have willingly and massively gave you the mandate, I enjoin to you to build on the good foundation la!d by the Comrade-Governor Adams Oshiomhole and ensure that Edo State is taking to the next level.”
