Sale of national assets would worsen our problems in Nigeria – Rights group tells Buhari

The Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice has warned the Federal Government led by President Muhhamadu Buhari not to put the nation’s assets for sale.
The Chairman of CHRSJ, Mr. Sulaiman Adeniyi, in a statement issued in Osogbo on Monday, said selling the national assets would end up worsening the current economic problem facing Nigeria.

Adeniyi was reacting to the calls by some Nigerians, like Africa’s acclaimed richest man, Aliko Dangote, President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki that the government should sell off the nation’s assets to take Nigeria out of economic crisis.

However, according to Adeniyi, the sale of the national assets would worsen unemployment problem.

He urged the President to reconsider the move in the interest of the masses.

He said, “Those who were canvassing for the selling of our National Assets and wealth, were looking for ways to acquire Nigeria’s properties through the backdoor by legal means; majority of them were part of those who caused the economy woes for the country.

“He should look for how to revive all the moribund industries like Steel Roiling Mills, Ajaokuta Steel Mills, Nigeria Machine Tools and host of others which would generate employments to the teeming youths, who are losing their jobs as a result of the present economy doldrums.

“Labour unions and civil society organisations in the country should not pay lip service to this issue of national interest. If the Federal Government remains adamant on this anti-masses agenda, labour unions should roll out the drum of national peaceful protests across the states of the federation on October 1st, 2016.”
