The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has reacted to appointment of the body’s commissioners.
Professor Yakubu said it was not within the jurisdiction of INEC to appoint commissioners.
He added that the Constitution vests such powers of appointing National Commissioners and Resident Commissioners with the presidency.
“We have no power to appoint. The President nominates in consultation with National Council of States for the National Assembly’s screening”, he told Daily Trust.
On 2019, he said it was not correct to suggest that INEC cannot conduct general elections because it did not have the full complement of National Commissioners and RECs.
“We are fully prepared in anticipation that the existing vacancies would sooner than later be filled by the Presidency”, he further stated.
