Borno plans relocation of IDPs to liberated communities

The Borno State government has said Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri would soon be relocated to three liberated communities in Konduga, Mafa and Dikwa.

This was disclosed yesterday in Maiduguri, the state capital by the Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (RRR), Dr. Babagana Umara while speaking with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Brig-Gen. Victor Ezugwu at the Maimalari Cantonment.

According to Umara: “Governor Kashim Shettima has ordered the immediate relocation of the IDPs from Maiduguri to Konduga, Mafa and Dikwa local councils. These people include those staying in refugee camp in Dikwa who will be immediately moved into the main border town of Cameroun.”

Meanwhile, to alleviate the suffering of people affected by the violence in North East Nigeria, International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Nigeria and IOM Cameroun have distributed 3,000 non-food relief items (NFI) to IDPs in the Nigerian border town of Banki.

Head of IOM Cameroun office, Roger Charles Evina said: “Despite the security and logistical challenges, IOM Cameroun is determined to support IOM Nigeria to reach people in dire need of humanitarian assistance.”

The items, which include mosquito nets, sleeping mats, laundry and bathing soap, sanitary pads and water purification tabs, were funded by the European Commission for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO) and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) in Nigeria.

IOM Nigeria recently provided emergency shelters for 6,800 people in Bama and Gwoza councils in Borno State.

The exercise was coordinated by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
