SUG urges Niger government to compensate pregnant student killed by oil tanker

The Students Union Government (SUG), College of Education, Minna, Niger, has called on the state government to compensate the family of a pregnant student killed by an articulated vehicle.
Mr Ahmad Tafyan, SUG president of the college, made the call on Wednesday in Minna in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

NAN recalls that the deceased, Mrs Angela Daniel was killed by the vehicle on Monday afternoon while on a motorcycle conveying her home after lectures along with another student who narrowly escaped with injuries.

The incident triggered demonstration by students of the college who blocked the Minna/Suleja dual carriageway for over four hours before the intervention of the police.

“We appeal to Niger state government to compensate the family of our colleague, who was killed on Monday by an oil tanker.

“We will not dictate how the family should be compensated but we will appreciate whatever government deems fit,’’ Tafyan told NAN.

He said that the late Daniel, a 300 level student of the School of Arts and Social Sciences was carrying her first pregnancy when the incidence happened.

The SUG president said that the deceased had not been buried as the police was investigating the issue to ascertain the claim of brake failure by the driver.

He called on the authority of the college to immortalise late Daniel who hails from Magama Local Government Area of the state as a mark of honour.

Tafyan also urged the authority of the institution to pay the hospital bill of the injured student who was conveying the deceased during the incident.

Meanwhile, the Provost of the College, Prof. Rasheed Faruk, told NAN that the institution would participate actively in the burial of the deceased.

Also speaking, DSP Bala Elkana, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, said that the police succeeded in arresting the driver of the tanker with the assistance of a motorist who was at the scene of accident.

“We arrested the driver and impounded the tanker. We have commenced investigation on the incident and the driver will be charged to court when we conclude investigation,’’ Elkana said. (NAN)
