‘Lagos digital library’ll promote culture, education’

The Lagos State Government says its digital library project will promote Yoruba history and cultural heritage.

It added that the library would offer stakeholders, comprising pupils, teachers and publishers, among others, unlimited access to education materials.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, who stated this in Lagos, explained that the library would provide access to knowledge for all through an online portal.

He said, “One of the key mandates of this administration is to solve problems and create value. In creating the digital library, we are committed to ensuring that we are not just setting up another online portal, but also providing a solution.

“The portal will feature history, culture and language lessons presented creatively in form of comics, interactive games and other media.”

The governor’s aide, who said the project would commence in January 2017, added that it would have such features as study aids, tutorials, instructional videos for pupils, Yoruba history, as well as an online forum.

Besides, Bank-Olemoh said the initiative would offer jobs to local programmers, developers as well as provide an avenue for writers and content producers to reach a wider audience.

He added, “The digital library is not intended to replace physical libraries, but rather, to extend their reach. Online resources will be supported by a strong offline strategy to promote a reading culture, encourage collaboration and create knowledge hub.”
