Flood Destroys Crops & 52 Houses In Sokoto

A late night flood on July 4 destroyed no fewer than 52 houses in Wurno, headquarters of Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The Chairman of the local government council, Alhaji Abdulkadir Jelani, disclosed this in Sokoto on Sunday while addressing newsmen.

Jelani, who attributed the incident to a down pour, also said: ” The problem was aggravated by the blockage of some drains in the town and its environs.

”This was also precipitated by the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and dumping of heaps of firewood in them.”

The chairman said that the victims were now squatting with neighbours, relatives and other sympathisers.

Jelani stated that although there was no loss of life, the flood destroyed assorted farm produce worth millions of naira.

They included onions, garlic, rice, wheat and beans following the submerging of hundreds of farmlands.
Jelani said that the local government had set up a 13-man committee to find out the remote and immediate causes of the disaster.

”It will also assess the extent of damage caused by the flood as well as recommend the form of assistance to be rendered to victims.

”I am also appealing to the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to come to the immediate aid of the victims, ” Jelani said.
